It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the death of Captain John McDermid of The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, yesterday, Wednesday 14 November 2007, in southern Afghanistan.

Captain McDermid, who was serving with 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, was leading a joint UK and Afghan National Army patrol to the south of the district centre of Sangin in Helmand Province, during which he was also mentoring an Afghan National Army officer in the leadership and infantry skills that platoon commanders need.

At approximately 1130 hours local time an Improvised Explosive Device detonated, which sadly resulted in the death of Captain McDermid and serious injury to the Afghan interpreter who was accompanying him.

The Ministry of Defence regrets to announce that Lance Corporal Sarah Holmes died in the UK on 14 October 2007 from injuries that she sustained in a road traffic accident in Al Udeid, Qatar, on 3 October 2007.

Lance Corporal Holmes was from 29 Postal Courier and Movement Regiment and was serving on Operation TELIC attached to 3 Logistic Support Regiment. She was working at the Al Udeid airfield when the car in which she was a passenger was involved in a collision with a truck.

Lance Corporal Holmes was taken by ambulance to hospital and from there back to the UK but unfortunately she later died from her injuries. Her next of kin were at her bedside.

SOTG SOLDIER KILLED DURING ASSAULT ON TALIBAN EXTREMISTS

An Australian Commando serving with the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) in Afghanistan was killed earlier today by Taliban extremists.

?Private Luke Worsley, 26 years of age from Sydney, was killed by small arms fire at about 7:30 this morning, Canberra time, while participating in a planned and deliberate attack by our forces against Taliban leaders and their supporters in Oruzgan Province,? Air Chief Marshal Houston said.

?This is a tragic day for the Australian Defence Force and most especially for Private Worsley?s family and friends. I extend my deepest sympathies to them on behalf of all members of the Defence Organisation.

?Defence is providing assistance to the family and will continue to support them through this very difficult time.

?The action in which Private Worsley died only concluded in the last few hours and was characterised by heavy, close quarter fighting.  The SOTG was conducting an operation to clear an identified Taliban bomb making facility in Oruzgan Province, when the soldier was hit by small arms fire.

Chief of the Defence Force Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston said the SOTG assault followed several weeks of monitoring and intelligence gathering by Australian and ISAF elements.

?No other Australian troops were killed or wounded in this protracted engagement, during which our soldiers acquitted themselves magnificently. Further details of the SOTG operation will not be released at this time.? Air Chief Marshal Houston said.

Rest In Peace; We pray that your family and Brothers in Arms are warmed by the presence of our Lord.
