The book "Red Star Rouge" by Kenneth Sewell with Clint Richmond poses a theory that the famous accidental sinking of the Soviet Golf-II Class nuclear missile sub K-129 was not accidental but sunk while trying to launch a nuclear missile against Pearl Harbor.

The theory suggest that high ranking members of the Politburo including KGB Chief Yuri Andropov and others used a Spetnaz team to seize a K-129 and make it look like a Chinese Golf I type secretly attacked Pearl Harbor. While launching the missile the physical fail safe on the missile's warhead exploded and caused the sinking of ship.

While the evidence is circumstantial in most cases and Sewell cites many sources that he can not name due to security and safety reasons. The theory is quite sound and the CIA cover story of a battery explosion is explained and disproved by a number of Soviet and American sources.

The book also disproves the other CIA cover story Project Jennifer (the supposed attempted raising of K-129) was unsuccesful. The CIA claimed they only recovered the front section of the sub, but Sewell cites some accidental evidence brought forth by American sources unintentionally.

The biggest of this evidence comes from during talks between Russia and the U.S. about the recovery of POW's and MIA's from the Cold War. The American ambassador to Russia at the time as a good well gesture gave the Russian delegation the bell from the K-129. The bell was welded and bolted permanately to the control room in the conning tower. As the author explains the only way the Americans could have gotten the bell was to have raised the whole ship.

Theory is interesting and enlighting about the situation during the Cold War. I personally think it is a pretty reasonable hypothesis for the actual sinking of the K-129. It would be a major shock if Sewell's claimed sources ever came to light and told us what really happened during the sinking of the K-129.

I am interested in hearing what other people think about the theory, especially anyone in China or Russia and what they know about the disaster.
