KABUL, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on Thursday categorically denied killing civilians in Afghanistan's eastern Nuristan province.
"Abdul Jan, a key Taliban commander, plus five of his men, were killed while running from their cave up to the tent," an ISAF spokesman Carlos Branco told newsmen here on Thursday.
Governor of Nuristan province Tamim Nursitani told reporters Wednesday that an air attack by the international troops in Norgram district of Nuristan province on Monday night left around one dozen workers of a local road construction company dead while some sources put the number of casualties as high as 25.
"Evidence strongly points that Taliban insurgents were killed in Norgram and not civilians," the NATO spokesman stressed.
He also added that ISAF and Afghan troops tracked the movement of Abdullah Jan the commander of Taliban in the area on the night of Nov. 26.
"This is the information that we have and we are confident this is reliable information," Branco further said, adding "as soon as we have more information we'll let you know."
