US, Russian Soldiers Train in Germany

Thursday December 13, 2007 10:31 PM

By MATT MOORE

Associated Press Writer

HOHENFELS, Germany (AP) - U.S. and Russian generals, undeterred by recent political tensions over a proposed American missile shield in Europe, said Thursday that their joint training exercises in Germany should expand because of a common enemy: global terrorism.

Lt. Gens. Kenneth Hunzeker of the U.S. and Vladimir Chirkin of Russia outlined the two-week exercise in southern Germany that put soldiers from both countries against an opposing enemy force, in an effort to better coordinate strategy, communications and tactics. It began Dec. 2 and ends Friday.

Hunzeker said that he and Chirkin ``have talked to our soldiers several times and said, 'This is not about politics. This is about how to work (military to military) operations so that our two nations can do that in the future in the global war on terror,'' he said.

Nope, doesn't suprise me. The Sikhs gave the Brits a good pounding in the Punjab, (Kiwi, Poppet, that's a location...not a body part....so put down your 'Gray's Anatomy'.  big grin) in the 19th Century, so we formed a couple of regiments of Sikhs. The Nepalese whopped the Brits....twice....then came and joined the newly formed Brigade of Gurkha's.

More recently, of course, we trained with German, Italian, French and let's not forget who fought two wars against the Brits....the Americans!!! big grin

I think it's good that former Warsaw Pact and Nato do train together. At least when the pollies screw up, the military will have a better understanding of the situation.  thumbs up
