ANZAC Day

I saw a kid marchin? with medals on his chest.
He marched alongside Diggers marching six abreast.
He knew that it was ANZAC Day - he walked along with pride.
He did his best to keep in step with the Diggers by his side.

And when the march was over the kid was rather tired.
A Digger said ?Whose medals, son?? to which the kid replied:
?They belong to daddy, but he did not come back.
He died up in New Guinea on a lonely jungle track?.

The kid looked rather sad then and a tear came to his eye.
The Digger said ?Don?t cry my son and I will tell you why.
Your daddy marched with us today - all the blooming way.
We Diggers know that he was there - it?s like that on ANZAC Day?.

The kid looked rather puzzled and didn?t understand,
But the Digger went on talking and started to wave his hand.
?For this great land we live in, there?s a price we have to pay
For we all love fun and merriment in this country where we live.
The price was that some soldier his precious life must give.

For you to go to school my lad and worship God at will,
Someone had to pay the price so the Diggers paid the bill.
Your daddy died for us my son - for all things good and true.
I wonder if you understand the things I?ve said to you?.

The kid looked up at the Digger - just for a little while
And with a changed expression, said, with a lovely smile:
?I know my dad marched here today - this is ANZAC Day.
I know he did. I know he did, all the bloomin? way?.

that was lovely to read, with the day fast approaching im am trying hard to get my daughter interested and she just doesnt want to come with me even though her step father to be, is marching as he does every year, as a returned serviceman. So this year ill be going to watch him march again which always brings a tear to my eye, its a day im proud of for not just my man but also my grandparents who are now deceased and for those who are still deployed, those who have passed over and those who are still with us.

I just wish there was a way to get my daughter interested..

slightly OT but we spent the Easter weekend in our nations great capital visiting the war memorial in preparation for the big deployment (next Monday)... and it was great to explain these things to our son, he's only 5 but it is such a great age to educate.

Debs, I hope your daughter comes around, even if it takes a few years!

thanks guys, she is 20 so I hope its not too late..I never attended an ANZAC day before until I met my man, then he dragged my butt out of bed and taught me about it, now I'm the one asking where are we going this year, and have you got your uniform dry cleaned, and I'm proud as punch, I love talking and listening to the old diggers on the day as well, we always buy a round of drinks for them too..if only I can drag her out but shes stubborn, a true Aries she is..where I'm a cancer so I'm the emotional one who gets all patriotic on the day.

I went to a few Anzac Day parades before I met my man, but now I get disappointed when I don't get to go. "The Last Post" has always had me in tears from the first note til the very end.
I'm a WW2 vets grand daughter & a very proud RAAF wife.
