My name is Erica and I am the proud wife a United States Marine and mother to 5 beautiflul daughters; two of which are my stepdaughters. We are stationed in Camp Pendleton, Ca. My husband will be deploying soon, for the first time... I'm worried about his safety but I know he's coming home to us when it's all said and done. He and the rest of our brave military service memebers have my deepest respect! I am currently continuing my education and will be graduating with my A.S. in Interdisciplinary Education Paraprofessional degree in October. I will be a teacher's assistant for Special Ed students. While I'm working , I'll be going back to school for my Bachelor's in Elementary Education as I'd like to become a full-fledged educator in the Chicago Publlic School System . Thanks for inviting me to this wonderful site, Kiwi! God bless our troops! Imerica

Welcome, champ! Respect to your husband, and respect to you for your determination and your motivation to further yourself through the applications of education. I wish I had the brains to go to University, however the whole 100 to 1 ratio never made it easy to get any assistance. Welcome aboard!

We all have the brains to continue our education. I just turned 34 but before I even thought about starting over (and about where the money was coming from) I'd decided not to persue. One day, though. Something told me that taking out a loan to invest in my education wasn't going to be that bad. I'm gladI did it. Hopefully, one day you'll do it also. Blessings, Erica

Ah, very well said. As for taking out a loan...eh, I'm dreadfully hopeless with money or anything that places me in a financial situation. Though I am responsible, I'm just not 'with it' when it comes to Maths. Not exactly one of my finer strong-points; but I am learning. Bit like you though, I'm preparing myself to sit a Vetasses Test to up my educational levels as I prepare for enlistment. Wise decisions you're making, my mother is planning to return to school - though at the moment she works in the Construction Industry which, uhm...rakes in a few buckaroos. Still, kudos for the enthusiasm and determination!

Welcome Erica, I hope that you enjoy the forum and the people.
There are others on here with partners or children currently deployed, so the support is also here as well. Any way again welcome Sniper

Still, kudos for the enthusiasm and determination! Preparation is always helpful. Anytime you can get in to study, (especially when it comes to math) do it because it will only benefit you academically in the end. I wish I had taken an entry test in the beginning of my studies... I dove right in and didn't find myself as prepared as I thought I would be. But with that fear behind me I can move forward and apply that preparation for another time in my life. As for loans, I understand what you're talking about. It was so hard for me to think about taking out a loan at first because I didn't want to see myself 25 years down the line paying off student loans like my mom did. I don't like owing anyone...I'd prefer to just pay what I owe the day after I recieve it so that no one is owed down the line. lol What I've come to realize is that once I start working in my field of study, I'll be able to budget how much I'll pay into my loan because the money will be available on a consistent basis. It's still hard to believe that I'm actually taking out a loan but my future's worth it.

It's still hard to believe that I'm actually taking out a loan but my future's worth it. Spot on. I understand my studies especially in Maths will up my anty a little bit towards the future, but I think alot of it depends on your approach. My approach in High School was 'Let's f#ck around like morons' and it evidently cost me quite a bit in the end - so preparation is key to successfully completing and obtaining your goals. Loans, well, I think the term speaks for itself. Credit Cards, Loans, Mortgages, etc. are running people into the ground these days - so from my personal observations I don't believe taking a loan out at the moment would be a great idea - especially during the enlistment process when I have much greater concerns. Education is everything these days, and while most of us will make that crucial mistake during our younger youth of trying to 'fit in' with conformity, the opportunities still remain. It depends on who has the determination to accomplish and acheive that will separate them from the mass. Nonetheless, the Military provides most of the qualifications I will ever need so I'm really not too concerned at this point as to my own education standards. So long as I can clear the basics things should be fine.

Hello Erica, and welcome. Another poor lamb burdened with a Marine. Never mind m'dear, things could be worse! I understand your worries about your husband's first deployment. Mrs Crusty used to fret like hell when I was campaigning with the Legions up by Hadrians Wall, trying to keep the Picts from coming over and stealing our sheep.....and women. Funny thing though....they used to keep the sheep, but throw the women back!
