We're determined to continue being a world class Army carrying the mana of all New Zealanders. While that mana is important when we're at home, it's even more crucial when we deploy overseas. New Zealand Army soldiers are currently serving and have served in missions in all four corners of the world. If you're looking to find out where we are and where we've been recently, check out the information in this section.

    * Incorporating humanitarian assistance into peace support operations, for example the Forward Surgical Team deployed to East Timor.
    * Disaster relief, for example the 1998 tsunamis in Papua New Guinea
    * The Mutual Assistance Programme (MAP), providing support to our pacific neighbours Using overseas exercises as opportunities to provide humanitarian assistance, for example Exercise Tropic Twilight.

They are always deployed, they never seem not to be. New Zealand is hugely focused on UN and reconstruction missions.

We are top in mine and bomb disposal.

I didn't know they were deployed to that many nations. I knew about the recent stuff, but what are they doing down south?

Playing with the Yanks  razz

Scott Base: Antarctica

Scott Base was constructed for New Zealand's participation in the International Geophysical Year and Commonwealth Transantarctic Expedition and was officially opened on January 20 1957.  Designed only for a short life the base began a rebuilding programme in 1976.

Scott Base accommodates up to 58 people over the summer and a skeleton staff of 10-14 over the winter.

Antarctica New Zealand manages Scott Base and supports scientific research in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, particularly the Ross Sea region. Antarctica New Zealand assumed responsibility for managing New Zealand's Antarctic activities on 01 July 1996.
The New Zealand Defence Force's Role

Each year Antarctica New Zealand requests New Zealand Defence Force support for the forthcoming Antarctic summer season. The NZDF also provides support to the United States Antarctic Programme.

Jobs include search and rescue support, air transport, Terminal Operations at Harewood (Christchurch Int. Airport) and McMurdo, ship offload operations and Scott Base support personnel.

There are currently ten NZDF personnel on the ice, led by Major Toni Duffield.

This year RNZAF No. 40 Squadron will undertake six C130 Hercules flights prior to Christmas 2007, with continued assistance during early 2008.  Due to weather conditions some flights are postponed or in some cases at the 'point of safe return' flights turn around and return to Christchurch due to rapid changing weather on the ice.
