STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - The Swedish military says it will add 27 more troops to its existing forces in Afghanistan.
Military spokesman Simon Rothstein says the extra personnel will travel to Afghanistan this week to support the 348 already in place.
Rothstein said Thursday the troops will provide surveillance and security for convoys in northern Afghanistan.
Sweden is not a NATO member, but operates under NATO command as part of the International Security Assistance Force.
The head of Sweden's strategic joint forces command said earlier this year he expects the unit to be increased to close to 500 soldiers next year because the overall situation in Afghanistan is worsening.
