I am only new around here but I would like to give an opinion on the ranking system.
Although I have searched for "An explaination of the ranks" topic, I can't see one.
But that aside, I notice that The Kiwi for instance has over 170 posts up and Collo over 160. Yet they are still lance corporals.
By 200 posts they should achieve a commision.
All forums where I have been in a position to do so, I always pushed for a fast promotion in ranks. It is absolutely essential for new members to see that they are getting an advancement. Many become bored if this doesn't happen and fall by the wayside.
Ranks should advance fast for newbies and slow up later. The old hands don't need it after a certain level is attained.
Forums are just for fun. It is fun to see the rank advance. It is a small reward for work done.
My suggestion is......

0 Private
10 Lance Corporal
25 Corporal
50 Sergeant
75 Warrant officer Class 2
100 Warrant Officer Class 1
200 2nd Lieutenant
300 Lieutenant
400 Captain
500 Major
650 Lt Colonel
850 Colonel
1000 Brigadier
2000 Lt General
3000 General

Firstly I would like to know what you mean by rank explaination?

You raise a vaild point. It's noted that on several forums the Officer rank so to speak only begin at 1000 or higher. I have selected our structure as it is our unique set up here on Military Global (also used by myself and Kiwi on ANZAC) and reflects the style of our forum. Over time the staff may modify and add ranks to conform with the forums needs such as growth in membership and active users but as for now I (not being able to voice the views of the other staff) will keep the set up as it is.

I will however, raise this question within the staff forum to which I will act upon the collective views of the staff.

At the end of the day, this is only a forum and the rank only means that the higher your progress the higher standad of conduct you will be held to.

The explaination of ranking is a feature on virtually all other forum software.
One can click on it to show what each level is.

You are right, it is only a forum. But a forum has to be designed to lure new members and then keep them.

I like to think that our members post here because they are interested and active in the topics raised on the forum and not for achieving forum rank.

We have displayed what each ranks are and what it takes to earn them in the Rules and Information forum, due to certain reasons; we are unable to post rank images thus why each member rank is color coded.

You are probably right. It is easy to assume that because you only have about six.
You have to start thinking how to increase that. Ranking advancement isn't the complete answer, but everything helps. To argue against any suggestion that would see the forum grow is wrong.

That is my suggestion based upon a lot of forum  experience. I leave it there.

Well as I said before, I have opened this up to discussion within the staff area. Well make a decisions  that is best suited for the forum.

Personally, forum rank isn't a really big deal. I would care more to look after needs that affect our members directly such a posting capabilities or resources on the forum over rank issues.

For my tuppence worth, I couldn't really give a stuff about 'rank'. That's not why I post. Having held the best rank ever, in real life, what I am in the cyber world worries me not one iota! Grin

Nicely put Crusty.

I met one of your Aussie brethren the other day who signed the guest book like such:

Only Sar'nts Majors can get away with that. Grin

Yeah well I'm really buckin' for promotion like the Americans say.  I'm desperate for advancement. I want my name in lights.

You guys just dont get it do you?. It has nothing to do with you. It is to do with making this forum more attractive and getting others to join and post.
The problem here is, decisions are being, and going to be made by old hands based around their own opinions and what they want, instead of what might be best for others.

Like I said, forget it.

So really this whole thread was established so you could get yourself promoted, it sounds you have your interests ahead of the forum.

Collo, are you really an idiot, or is this an act you are putting on?

Any suggestion I ever put forward is for the betterment of any forum that I belong to.
What do any of us ever get out of any of these forums? But if there is going to be an attitude like I am detecting right now, now is the time to be thinking that the only posting member you have that isn't a Mod or Admin had better be done away with.
At the moment this forum is top heavy with admins and mods. I think I'm the only member.

However if I do ever reach General rank on this forum, which now seems doubtful, it will mean that I have benefited the forum immensely with 2000 to 3000 posts.

If you are suggesting that I'm stalling the implementation of a new ranking system ("old hands") then you are mistaken. I'm not interfering with any aspect of forum related decision making.

Watch your language. Insulting (important) people around you and calling them names is not a good way of getting things done.

It's OK people, I have handed this entire matter to 101, if he wants to have a new rank structure, by all means he can take care of everything such as the color for each rank, the post requirement. If he does this I would be more than happy to edit the rank structure for him.

Also, if he thinks I am an idiot, that's fine; that's his opinion.

I don't know what you are complaining about Sri. You handed the whole forum over to me once before and I did 110  good posts for you with photographic attachments. You didn't do a single one because you said you didn't know anything about computers.
I therefore put down my repeated, unanswered, nighly requests for technical help to enhance the forum on the fact that this also meant you didn't know how to e-mail either.

Sorry but I understood that all this was in the past.

101 if you want to edit the ranks, go ahead and the submit them to me and I will load them until then if you have nothing constructive to post, I suggest you hold your tounge (so to speak).
