Fidel Castro resigns as President of Cuba.
81 year old President of Cuba steps down, after 49 years in power, called a dictator by many, including many Cubans and a saviour of Cuba by other Cubans, his ideas and stances and decisions have been very controversial at times in history.
Fidel Castro says in a letter released Tuesday February 19 2008, I will not aspire to neither will I accept I repeat I will not aspire to neither will I accept the position of President of the Council of State and Commander in chief," he wrote in the letter. He goes on to say: It would betray my conscience to occupy a responsibility that requires mobility and the total commitment that I am not in the physical condition to offer."
President Bush welcomed the announcement of Castros resignation.
Fidel Castro has handed power temporarily over to his 76 year old brother Raul Castro.
