Pakistan Elections.
The results of the parliamentary elections held on February 18 in Pakistan, have shown a clear defeat to President Musharraf’s party.
The opposition however did not win a strong enough majority, in order to oust President Musharraf from power.
The PPP, Pakistan’s Peoples Party, the party of the late Benazir Bhutto, has won a large amount of votes. Followed by Nawaz Sharifs party the PML-N. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. Great jubilation and celebration took place by Pakistanis supporting the opposition.
President Musharraf has said in a statement released by the Pakistani Foreign ministry: "The elections have strengthened the moderate forces in the country."
President Musharraf has stated that he would work together with any new Government.
The husband of the late Benazir Bhutto and current leader of the PPP Mr Asif Ali Zardari said his party would "form a government of national consensus which will take along every democratic force" Mr Zardari who is not an MP, has ruled himself out to becoming Prime Minister.
Nawaz Sharif the head of the PML-N has once again asked President Musharraf to resign. In October 1999 General Pervez Musharraf had ousted then Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif from power in a military coup.
President Mussharaf has ruled out stepping down from power according to an interview he gave to the Wall Street Journal. President Musharraf was re elected by the Pakistani Parliament in October 2008. The Opposition had boycotted that election and accused Musharraf of holding on to power illegally. An accusation that Musharraf has denied several times.
It is reported that some Bush administration officials have said, the United States would still like to see Pakistan's opposition leaders find a way to work with Musharraf, The US considers President Musharraf a strong ally on the war on terror.
The next few days, and weeks should be interesting to follow.
