India, Russia to Jointly Market BrahMos Cruise Missile

2007-01-23 Dismissing as without any "basis" reports of Moscow's reservations on export of Brahmos missiles, top officials today said joint venture partners India and Russia have identified countries to whom it can be sold.

"There is nothing official about it," A Dergachev Alexander, Chairman, Board of Directors of BrahMos, told reporters here. "There is no basis for the reports," Alexander said.

He said a supervisory committee comprising representatives from governments of Russia and India have already finalised a list of "friendly countries" to whom the 290 km-range supersonic missiles can be sold.

"The inter-government agreement on BrahMos stipulates that the missiles will be sold to friendly nations," G Leonov Alexander, Designer General of BrahMos said.

The Indo-Russian venture aims to sell about 1,000 missiles in the "near future" to clients in India, Russia and some friendly countries.

"There is a market for at least 2,000 supersonic cruise missiles," BrahMos Chief Executive Officer A Sivathanu Pillai said adding that the market could be even bigger than analysed as many missiles currently in use were becoming outdated.

Colonel-General Anatoly Mazurkevich, who heads the international cooperation department of the Russian defence ministry, had said in Moscow on Sunday that Moscow was not keen to export the weapon as it was "highly lethal for potential enemies".
